With summer winding down, I decided it was time to squeeze in one last trip to Iggy’s. For most Rhode Islanders, including myself, summer is incomplete without at least one visit to this famous beach side landmark. During the summer months, both locals and tourists flock to Iggy’s in search of some of the best clam cakes and doughboys the Ocean State has to offer. So I visited their Narragansett location to indulge on these deep-fried delights.
As usual, I couldn’t decide whether to order clam cakes or doughboys (decisions…decisions…). So what did I do? I ordered both! A half-dozen of each actually. With greasy bags in hand, I headed down to the beach and enjoyed the ultimate picnic on the sand.
Life doesn’t get much better than this!
A special sneak peek inside the bag
If this doesn’t make your mouth water, I don’t know what will!
These deep-fried balls of dough were glistening as much as the summer sun. Just take a look at the picture above. Now that’s a thing of beauty!
Once you take a bite into one of these bad boys, you will be instantly addicted. The crispy outer layer conceals a soft, spongy center. Hidden inside, you will find some chopped clams scattered throughout. Unfortunately, it took about three clam cakes until I found my first clam!! Without the clam, you can’t really call them clam cakes. They’re just cakes, right?!
I personally enjoyed the doughboys over the clam cakes. These are not your typical doughboys found at your local carnival or amusement park. Iggy’s version are plush and pillowy. Somehow they even taste surprisingly light, which is an incredible feat since they are thrown in a deep fryer! Smothered in sugar, these treats make the perfect dessert…or you could even have them for dinner! I won’t judge you, I promise.
If you haven’t been to Iggy’s yet this summer, you still have time. Head down to the beach while the weather is still warm and grab some clam cakes, doughboys, or chowder on the way home.
Here’s a few more pictures from my day at the beach. Enjoy!!!
