I think it’s safe to say that summer is in full swing here in Rhode Island. The fact that I begin to sweat as soon as I step out of the shower pretty much indicates that it’s the season of outdoor eating and fun in the sun. This past weekend, we stopped by AQUA for a quick bite and to see what their poolside mantra is all about. For over the past three years, AQUA has been tucked cozily within the confines of the Providence Marriott and only until recently did we discover that it’s not just for hotel guests, but for the general public as well. You would never guess such an oasis exists from looking at the exterior of the popular downtown hotel…but guess again. Surrounding the outer rim of the pool are tons of couches, chairs and cabanas that instantly take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city. During the week (Monday-Thursday) you can simply purchase a Day Pass and enjoy full access to their connecting indoor/outdoor pools. And the best part? Parking is free!
Once you’re settled in, be sure to take a gander at their menu and signature cocktail list. The menu, crafted by the chefs over at the Bluefin Grille, is tailored for poolside grubbing. From lobster rolls to grilled flatbread pizzas, there’s sure to be something on the menu that’ll keep you out of the pool for a least 30 minutes!
Watermelon Salad – The components of this salad may sound a bit odd together but the flavors work. The arugula, with its sharp, slightly bitter taste pairs amazingly with the juicy chunks of watermelon. The perfect salad to cool off with by the pool.
Potstickers – The filling of ground pork and scallion was moist throughout, but the outer coating seemed a bit doughy.
Point Judith Calamari – Ordering these crispy cuts of squid was a no brainer. After recently being named the official appetizer of Rhode Island, we had to give Aqua’s rendition a try. Don’t think hard and long about ordering them. Just do it.
Lobster Roll – I absolutely loved AQUA’s idea of using a brioche roll and stuffing it with shredded chunks of lobster. It’s a great alternative to the standard New England-style hotdog bun. Another reason why I love their lobster roll is that it’s entirely filled with lobster (none of that celery or lettuce crap here folks)!
Monterey Turkey Burger – Their charred, moist turkey patty is topped with heaping scoops of salsa and guacamole. If you’re hungry and looking for something lighter, then order up this bird on a bun. Served alongside the burger is a mound of housemade potato chips.
Ice Cream Sandwich – Two soft Peanut Butter cookies with Vanilla Bean ice cream smack dab in the middle. Need I say more?
Fruit Fondue – A platter of strawberries, bananas, marshmallows, graham crackers and caramel chocolate sauce. It’s like s’mores by the water!
