Sandwiches: An Ocean State of Mind

People love sandwiches and oddly enough, love when other people make sandwiches for them. Two slices of bread and any assortment of meat, cheese and veggies and BOOM, a sandwich has been created. What’s so hard about that? Despite the ease of difficulty, we still find ourselves at local sandwich shops, cafes, and dare I say it, Subway. Well folks, after reading this, be sure to add Ocean State Sandwich Co. to your list of go-to sandwich spots.

With the use of local ingredients and partnerships, owner Eric Handwerger has been applying a no-nonsense approach to sandwich crafting. Just take a look at their menu. From freshly baked Buono’s rolls to eggs and dairy products from Stamp Farms, Eric takes pride in the local connection. And it’s that attention to detail that is quickly making OS Sandwich Co. a favorite in the Johnston community. All of their sandwiches, soups and salads are all house made and we were fortunate enough to try out a few of Eric’s favorite creations.

Roast Beef
– Cold slices of medium rare roast beef are topped with lettuce, tomato and a slather of horseradish mayo. Classic sandwich. Classic flavors.

Apple Valley Turkey - Easily one of my favorite sandwiches. It starts out with House Roasted Turkey and then layers of bacon, red onion, thinly slice Granny Smith apples and a Sun Dried Tomato mayo provide the bookends. Well done Eric. Well done.

Apple Tree Chicken Salad - The use of dill really makes each bite stand out. Throw in some craisins for sweetness and you got yourself one helluva chicken salad sandwich. There’s more to life than Willow Tree, trust me.

Ocean State Ultimate Grinder – If you’re trying out Eric’s sandwiches for the first time, this is the go-to order. The house made Sun Dried Tomato and Banana Pepper Relish is simply bliss. The soft, sturdy Buono’s roll anchors the sandwich and this is the one that will keep me coming back for more.
