What is the most you would pay for a single shot of cognac? Well, if you are willing to break the bank, take out a second mortgage and spend $1,500 on 1.5 ounces of alcohol, head down to Café Nuovo in Providence for one of the finest, rarest Cognacs in the world, Remy Martin’s Louis XIII Black Pearl.
I know what you’re thinking, why is it so expensive? Will it give me magical powers? Is it from the fountain of youth? The answer is no and no. The Black Pearl has been aged upwards of 100 years, made with over 1,200 brandies, and blended in one barrel, making this product extremely sought after. The absurdly steep price tag is also due to its overall rarity. There are only 358 bottles in the world! Café Nuovo has number 181. Damn the lucky bastard that scored number 1!
Apparently an anonymous customer requested that Café Nuovo purchase Black Pearl for SPECIAL OCCASSIONS! I’m not sure what type of special occasion merits a round of shots at $1,500 a pop (hitting the lottery is the only thing that comes to mind at the moment). But Café Nuovo, being in the business to please customers, obviously pays close attention to their suggestion box because they actually fulfilled this customer’s far-fetched request. They spent a whopping $40,000 for a 1.75 Liter bottle and can proudly say they are the only restaurant in Rhode Island where this bottle can be found.
I would hate to be the bartender responsible for handling a $40,000 bottle of alcohol. God forbid he suddenly has a sneezing spell or gets a case of the jitters, sending the bottle crashing to the floor, bursting into 40,000 pieces. I am sure the bottle is carefully insured but it might be difficult to get their hands on another bottle this rare. Who would have thought pouring a drink would come with so much responsibility?
I’m not sure if Café Nuovo is expecting a surprise visit from the King of England, Donald Trump, or Bill Gates, otherwise I expect the Black Pearl to sit on their shelf for a LONG TIME, completely untouched.
If you are like Sean “P.Diddy” Combs (who just so happens to be the perfect candidate for purchasing the Black Pearl) and you have so much money you have never seen a $1 bill before, head down to Café Nuovo.
You can obtain the ultimate bragging rights and be one of the few to taste test the luxurious Louis XIII Black Pearl.
